{"id":1053,"date":"2016-10-11T10:00:21","date_gmt":"2016-10-11T09:00:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/dragonsflamedesigns.co.uk\/knit\/?p=1053"},"modified":"2017-12-16T13:04:17","modified_gmt":"2017-12-16T12:04:17","slug":"adventures-hemming-jersey","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dragonsflamedesigns.co.uk\/knit\/adventures-hemming-jersey\/","title":{"rendered":"Adventures in hemming jersey"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>My first attempts at hemming jersey were complete failures &#8211; none of the hems stretched with the fabric, which\u00a0resulted in several scrapped items. \u00a0Ideally I&#8217;m looking for a hem that looks &#8220;right&#8221; for a\u00a0sweatshirt or t-shirt &#8211; either something that looks\u00a0like a regular straight stitch, or a twin needle effect. Sewing two lines of stitches just left me with a seam that had no stretch at all, so I&#8217;ve\u00a0given up on the twin needle look\u00a0for the moment.<\/p>\n<p>After asking some advice\u00a0in an online sewing group, I dug out my sewing machine&#8217;s instruction book and set about making some scrap hems to see which one came out best. Three stitches were recommended:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>regular narrow zigzag<\/li>\n<li>lightning bolt stitch<\/li>\n<li>triple stretch straight stitch.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Narrow\u00a0zigzags haven&#8217;t stretched\u00a0as much as I need and a wider zigzag has given\u00a0a lot of tunnelling where the fabric catches up, so I didn&#8217;t try that out this time. I don&#8217;t actually have a lightning bolt stitch on my machine, and I&#8217;m pretty sure the\u00a0triple stretch straight stitch is what my machine calls the\u00a0Straight Stretch Stitch.<\/p>\n<p>Setting my machine up with the even-feed (walking) foot and a ballpoint needle, I changed the tension\u00a0to match the\u00a0instruction book&#8217;s details, and lowered the pressure on the foot to the &#8216;applique&#8217; setting.<\/p>\n<p>First up was the\u00a0<strong>Straight Stretch Stitch\u00a0<\/strong>which to give credit to my machine&#8217;s instruction book, is used for\u00a0<em>reinforcing a hem (such as the crotch of a pair of trousers)<\/em> as well as in bag making as the stitch will not unravel. It doesn&#8217;t mention using this for stretchy fabric at all.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1058\" src=\"https:\/\/dragonsflamedesigns.co.uk\/knit\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/straight-stretch-stitch.jpg\" alt=\"Dragons Flame Designs - Hemming Jersey\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dragonsflamedesigns.co.uk\/knit\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/straight-stretch-stitch.jpg 500w, https:\/\/dragonsflamedesigns.co.uk\/knit\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/straight-stretch-stitch-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I could probably adjust the\u00a0stitch length to get it to look slightly neater &#8211; parts of it line up right, but others looked quite messy. However, it didn&#8217;t actually stretch all that much &#8211; the jersey could stretch twice as much as the stitches allowed.<\/p>\n<p>So that clearly wasn&#8217;t going to work for a sweatshirt that needed to stretch enough to allow me to get it on. Maybe the <strong>Stretch Zigzag Stitch<\/strong> which the instructions say can be used\u00a0<em>whenever you would use a regular zigzag, but for knit fabric<\/em>\u00a0would be better.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1059\" src=\"https:\/\/dragonsflamedesigns.co.uk\/knit\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/zigzag-stretch-stitch.jpg\" alt=\"Dragons Flame Designs - Hemming Jersey\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dragonsflamedesigns.co.uk\/knit\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/zigzag-stretch-stitch.jpg 500w, https:\/\/dragonsflamedesigns.co.uk\/knit\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/zigzag-stretch-stitch-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Again, the stitch length could do with adjusting to get the triple stitches to line up correctly. However, it does stretch perfectly, and while it would be ok for a seam, it doesn&#8217;t look neat enough for a hem stitch that will show on the right side.<\/p>\n<p>Flicking a page or two back, I came across the\u00a0<strong>Knit Stitch<\/strong> which is said to\u00a0<em>finish off the ends and seam at the same time<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1057\" src=\"https:\/\/dragonsflamedesigns.co.uk\/knit\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/mitts-stitch.jpg\" alt=\"Dragons Flame Designs - Hemming Jersey\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dragonsflamedesigns.co.uk\/knit\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/mitts-stitch.jpg 500w, https:\/\/dragonsflamedesigns.co.uk\/knit\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/mitts-stitch-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This one also has a perfect amount of stretch, and doesn&#8217;t look too terrible even though it&#8217;s not quite the look I was aiming for. It did however make for a brilliant pair of fingerless mitts! I hemmed the top and bottom with the knit stitch, then stitched the side seam with the straight stretch stitch,\u00a0remembering to leave a thumb hole!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1054\" src=\"https:\/\/dragonsflamedesigns.co.uk\/knit\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/fingerless-mitts.jpg\" alt=\"Dragons Flame Designs - Hemming Jersey\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dragonsflamedesigns.co.uk\/knit\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/fingerless-mitts.jpg 500w, https:\/\/dragonsflamedesigns.co.uk\/knit\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/fingerless-mitts-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m not as fussed about the look of the stitch for these &#8211; as long as the fabric stretches sufficiently so I can wear them comfortably, I&#8217;d rather people were looking at the unusual stitches on my gloves than staring at the eczema on my hands! Overall, these are the most successful mitts I&#8217;ve sewn so far, and the knit stitch hem is perfect &#8211; stretchy without leaving a bulk of stitches on the inside that might irritate my skin.<\/p>\n<p>I decided to use the same stitch to hem the fleece hoodie I started making last winter &#8211; I was determined to finish it before this winter, so I can actually get some wear from it!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1055\" src=\"https:\/\/dragonsflamedesigns.co.uk\/knit\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/hoodie-hem.jpg\" alt=\"Dragons Flame Designs - Hemming Jersey\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dragonsflamedesigns.co.uk\/knit\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/hoodie-hem.jpg 500w, https:\/\/dragonsflamedesigns.co.uk\/knit\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/hoodie-hem-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>These stitches don&#8217;t show up as clearly, as the thread is an almost exact match for the fleece. However, if I was making a sweatshirt or t-shirt in a patterned fabric, I think I\u00a0still\u00a0would want a\u00a0stitch that\u00a0looks a little more &#8216;normal&#8217;.
